My name is Lindsey Moore and I’m a nonbinary comic artist and illustrator living in Seattle, WA. I graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2018 with a BFA in Design. Now I’m working on my first full-length graphic novel, Throne of the Fire King, and I perform with the Seattle Knights in my free time.

Dragons have fascinated me from the first time I read Eragon when I was nine. I was a very small, shy kid in a class of very tall, rowdy peers, and something about the idea of a giant flying, fire-breathing lizard that could also be my friend spoke to me.  That was the year I got my first dragon toys too—many of the characters from Throne evolved from my old dragon toys. Dragons to me were the ideal form of being: they could fly (a major goal of mine at nine), they could eat everything in the grocery store, and if someone made fun of them they could just burn them up.

When I began questioning my gender identity, I distinctly remember thinking, “If I were a dragon I’d be a genderless dragon.” I wouldn’t begin to identify as nonbinary for another three years, and I wouldn’t transition for another six, but that thought has always stuck with me. In Throne I wanted to make the reader question their assumptions about gender by using that idea: my dragons’ genders aren’t visually distinct from each other, and I don’t refer to either of my protagonists using gendered pronouns. Gender is varied and beautiful and I want my comic to reflect that.

Another interest of mine is medieval European history and culture. I love seeing the ways people built houses, made clothes and tools, and preserved food before industrialization, and I love seeing the different ideas people had about fashion and art and music. I tried to slip as many accuracies into the clothing, architecture, decorations, and culture as I could, albeit with some dragony touches. Doing research for Throne is what led me to finding the Seattle Knights and becoming a medieval reenactor.

And why do flying, fire-breathing dragons need swords and armor? Cause I think it’s hella cool.
